Clinical Corner

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Clinical Corner page contains forms and information for use by outside clinical instructors.

Clinical education provides students with a way to apply their acquired knowledge to real patients in the clinical environment. The students are assigned to clinical instructors to assist in professional development and provide supervision and guidance throughout their clinical experiences. The clinical instructor serves as a role model and mentor in the clinical to assist the student with development of their professional and clinical skills. Students observe the clinical instructors everyday roles and duties to learn what is expected of them as clinicians. After the completion of the PTA program including didactic and the clinical education portion of the curriculum, students are expected to exhibit the minimum required skills of PTA.

General suggestions to provide a great clinical experience: We believe that students need to be involved so that they can be active, engaged learners. As a CI, you have the opportunity to start the clinical off on a great footing. We suggest that you do the following on the first day:

  • Welcome the student to lunch with the team.
  • Coordinate learning experiences that are appropriate for the student’s level.
  • Set weekly goals with the students.
  • Establish a professional relationship.
  • Discuss the variety of services available from which your student can learn.

As the weeks progress, your student should also progress. We suggest the following:

  • Encourage students to be active learners.
  • Provide constructive feedback.
  • Promote creativity.
  • Allow students to correct their mistakes and struggle a little before intervening.
  • Encourage self-evaluation.
  • Encourage self-confidence
  • Increase the complexity of tasks throughout the clinical experience.
  • Expose the student to a variety of patients and treatment.

Feedback: We ask that you provide your student with frequent feedback regarding all roles of their clinical development. Best practices are that this feedback is concise, yet be given with both positive behaviors and skills along with ones that need to be improved. We ask that you discuss with your student their preferred method of feedback, in front of the patient in the moment or following patient interactions out of earshot of the patient. Of course, in an emergent condition, feedback should always be given in the moment.

Thank you very much for assisting Edison State students in their pursuit of a wonderful clinical and scholastic educational experience!
