The Paramedic Certificate is listed as an in-demand job that is in critical shortage on the Ohio Means Jobs website. The Paramedic program trains and educates allied health professionals whose primary focus is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients. Paramedic students will gain the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Paramedics function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight, and perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance or fire/rescue vehicle. The paramedic is a vital link from the scene into the health care system.
The Edison State Paramedic Program has adopted the CAAHEP definition of Team Lead. The Paramedic student must conduct a comprehensive assessment, establish a field impression, determine patient acuity, formulate a treatment plan, direct the treatment, and direct and participate in the transport of the patient to a medical facility, transfer of care to a higher level of medical authority, or termination of care in the field. Accreditation ►
The Edison State Community College Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status; it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the NREMT’s Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.

CAAHEP MINIMUM EXPECTATION GOAL STATEMENT ►
To prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels. - CAAHEP Standard II.C

►have a negative 10-panel drug screen;
►possess a valid EMT Ohio State certification; and

Program Outcomes ►
The student will
- demonstrate ability to work within the profession as an integral member of a paramedic health care team while adhering to professional and ethical standards;
- describe the roles of the paramedic in the health care system;
- demonstrate the professional attributes expected of paramedics;
- utilize and apply both the knowledge-based and psychomotor skills and activities, dictated by the Ohio Board of Paramedics, as a paramedic first responder;
- recognize the knowledge presented and reviewed during the program to successfully sit for the Paramedic State Exam;
- establish and maintain a work environment that ensures the safety of patients, bystanders, and professional team members;
- perform the duties of a paramedic with regard for medical-legal and ethical issues, including functioning under medical direction and within the scope of practice;
- apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, life span development, and therapeutic communications to the assessment and management of patients;
- identify the need for and perform immediately lifesaving interventions to manage a patient’s airway, breathing, and circulation;
- apply principles of emergency medical service operations, including considerations in ambulance and air medical transportation, multiple casualty incidents, gaining access to and extricating patients, hazardous materials incidents, and responding to situations involving weapons of mass destruction or environmental concerns.
