Career Outlook

Transfer Agreements

The Medical Laboratory Technician (also known as Clinical Laboratory Technician) program is designed for students who want to contribute to the healthcare field by helping physicians accurately diagnose and treat patients via testing. This program provides students with the skills needed to obtain, process, test and evaluate various biological samples taken from patients, including blood and other body fluids. Students will also become familiar with the use and maintenance of the equipment used in a clinical laboratory. Intensive coursework will be completed on campus, while hands-on practice will take place at participating clinical sites. Individuals trained in this specialty are currently in demand.

The program consists of sequential courses which require four consecutive terms to complete. To extend the Medical Laboratory Technician program over more than two years, a person may take one, two or three general studies or science classes per semester prior to applying for admission to the program. Continuation in and graduation from the MLT program is contingent upon the student earning a minimum grade of “B” or “C” in the courses indicated in the tables below. Classes are held in classrooms and laboratories, while area hospitals provide clinical training sites.

Accreditation ►
The Medical Laboratory Technician program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)♦  NOTE  Documentation is on file with the program director.
♦ National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences | 5600 N. River Road, Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018 | 773.714.8880

Medical Laboratory Technician Program Applicants ►
In addition to complying with the College’s general admission procedures, Medical Laboratory Technician applicants must
have successfully completed one year of high school chemistry within the last 5 years. Applicants may take Introduction to Chemistry (CHM 110S)  as an equivalent course;
have a satisfactory math assessment score or a grade of “B” or better in Math Literacy (MTH 093D) ;
have satisfactory assessment scores in reading and writing and are prepared to take Composition I (ENG 121S)  or successfully complete Developmental Reading and Writing (ENG 092D) ;
have successfully completed first and second semester courses listed for the MLT degree except Introduction to Laboratory Medicine (MLT 121S)  and Urinalysis and Body Fluids (MLT 135S) . These courses must be completed by the end of the Spring Late term; and

Applications will be available online , in Student Services, at the Darke County Campus and in the MLT program office between September 1 and December 31. At the time of application, the applicant should demonstrate a clear plan to meet the above requirements prior to entry into the Medical Laboratory Technician program.

MLT program applications will be reviewed to select the class that will begin courses Spring Late term. All applicants will receive written notification of the status of their application by January 17, 2020. Students must successfully complete application requirements prior to the start of the fall MLT clinical courses.

Those selected for the program are required to have physical and immunization forms completed by a physician as well as successful background checks (FBI and BCI) and a drug screening. Applicants selected to the program will receive further information regarding these requirements. If selected for the MLT program, coursework for semesters three and four must be taken consecutively and full time during the day.
