General Degree Requirements

Introduction

The charts below outline the general semester hour requirements for the associate’s degrees offered by Edison State Community College. The hours listed are minimums. Most technical degrees require more than the 60 hours shown.

Each Associate degree has requirements for 
1. Computer Literacy
2. Communication Arts
3. Social and Behavioral Sciences
4. Laboratory Natural Sciences and Mathematics
5. Humanities

The Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees have two additional requirement categories ►
Diversity Requirement One diversity course chosen by the student from social and behavioral sciences or humanities categories
Electives May be chosen by the student from courses relevant to the student’s concentration area (major)

The Associate of Applied Business, Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Technical Study have two additional requirement categories ►

Refer to the specific degree options for the recommended courses to satisfy these requirements.

For example ►
For the Associate of Applied Business, Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Technical Study degree, three semester hours are required from category 3. Social and Behavioral Sciences. Many of these degrees specify a recommended course, but some offer the student the option of choosing from the courses listed below the category heading. For the Associate of Arts degree, 12 semester hours (four courses) are required from the 3. Social and Behavioral Sciences category, and must be chosen from at least two disciplines (for instance, Economics and Psychology). For the Associate of Science degree, nine semester hours (three courses) are required from the 3. Social and Behavioral Sciences category, and again from at least two disciplines. NOTE See an academic advisor if you have questions about fulfilling the general semester hour requirements for your degree.

 

Associate of Arts (AA) General Requirements

1. Computer Literacy   0-3 credit hours

Computer literacy may be demonstrated through the completion of credit courses appropriate to the student’s intended transfer major. CIS 110S  or CIS 100S  and two additional one-hour modules CIS 101S  or CIS 104S  are recommended unless another course recommended by the faculty advisor is more appropriate for the student’s major. NOTE Computer literacy from previous education or work experience can also meet this requirement. Written approval by the student’s faculty advisor and dean is required.

2. Communication Arts   6 credit hours

7. Electives   21-24 credit hours

Additional electives should be based upon the student’s field of study and the four-year college to which the student plans to transfer. Many colleges have a language requirement which should be considered. Students should see an advisor for suggested curricula.
