Medical Assistant Certificate

The Edison Community College Medical Assistant Certificate Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs ( upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

Medical Assistant Certificate Students

In addition to complying with the College's general admission procedures, medical assistant certificate students must have:

  1. A cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).
  2. Tested into MTH 098D Intermediate Algebra I  or received a "C" or better in MTH 097D Beginning Algebra .
  3. Satisfactory assessment scores in reading and writing to be ready to take ENG 121S Composition I  or successfully complete ENG 091D Basic Writing  and ENG 093D College Preparatory Reading .
  4. Strongly recommended:  Completed OSA 151S Medical Terminology  and BIO 124S Human Biology  prior to entering MED 120S.
  5. OSA 111S , OSA 151S , OSA 230S , OSA 233S , OSA 252S , and BIO 124S  must be taken no more than 5 years prior to starting MED 120S.  If it has been longer than 5 years for any of these courses, the student must repeat the course(s).
  6. Departmental permission from Program Director prior to entering MED 120S.  Please schedule a meeting with the Director at the beginning of spring semester prior to fall enrollment for MED 120S.

Students are required to complete a physical exam and additional health requirements at their own expense, prior to entering MED 150S . Students must have a successful criminal background check in MED 150S .  Professional CPR and First Aid certification is required prior to MED 220S .   Students must complete each OSA and MED course with a grade of "C" or better to continue in the program. Credits transferred from other accredited institutions must also be a "C" or better.

  7. Adapt methods and techniques to the individual needs or capabilities of patients;
  8. Apply skills, attitudes, and dispositions to reflect Edison's Academic Core Values.
