Nursing, Registered

The Nursing degree program can be completed in two years.  Graduates receive the Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam (NCLEX) for licensure as registered nurses.*  Such nurses are prepared to provide evidenced-based, patient-centered care across the life-span.  Possible job titles in Registered Nursing include staff nurse in hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, home health, long-term care and health care settings.

The LPN/ADN Transition option facilitates the growth of a Licensed Practical Nurse to a Registered Nurse.  Graduates receive the Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam (NCLEX) for licensure as registered nurses.*  Such nurses provide direct care to persons with common short-term and long-term illnesses. Employment opportunities include hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, physicians' offices, and many other locations.

*The Ohio Board of Nursing has specific requirements regarding criminal conviction and criminal background checks which must be met before being approved to take the NCLEX.

The Edison State Community College Nursing Program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing** and approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Nursing Degree and LPN/ADN Transfer Program Outcomes

The student will, as a:

Provider of Care
  1. Synthesize knowledge in the sciences, humanities and nursing for the promotion of wellness and identification of changes in health status.
  2. Demonstrate patient-centered care within the context of the patient's ethnic, cultural and social background.
  3. Use clinical judgment to safely:
  • Assess wellness/health status.
  • Formulate nursing diagnoses.
  • Collaborate with patient and his/her family or surrogates to develop outcomes incorporating patient preferences and values.
  • Provide evidence-based therapeutic interventions, differentiating between clinical opinion and levels of scientific evidence, to achieve outcomes.
  • Evaluate outcomes and reformulate interventions as needed.
  1. Demonstrate clinical competence.
  2. Demonstrate effective communication to provide emotional support and physical comfort.
  3. Demonstrate effective communication to provide health teaching and counseling.
  4. Use informatics to communicate, manage health data, promote safety and reduce risks.
Manager of Care
  1. Demonstrate interdisciplinary team collaboration to achieve outcomes and resolve conflict.
  2. Coordinate care to safely direct, delegate and supervise others.
  3. Appraise care to reduce risks to both patients and team members.
  4. Evaluate cost-effectiveness of team actions.
  5. Use informatics to promote quality.
Member of the Profession
  1. Demonstrate professional standards including ethical and legal standards of nursing.
  2. Use research and recognizes differences between clinical opinion and levels of scientific evidence to make and evaluate practice decisions.
  3. Analyze regional, national and global implications affecting quality, safety and access in health care.
  4. Demonstrate responsibility for personal learning, growth and serving as a mentor.
