Social Services

The Social Services degree program prepares persons for entry-level paraprofessional positions in social service agencies. Courses introduce students to the career of social work, as well as generalist social work practice, methods/skills, knowledge base, and professional values. Students receive a solid foundation in the social behavioral sciences. Students complete 420 clock hours of internship experience, providing practical opportunities for skill development and enhancement.

While graduates of a two year program will not perform the same functions as professional social workers, counselors, or therapists, they can expect to provide valuable and meaningful service in diverse social service settings, empowering individuals, families, and communities.

This degree maintains a clear career focus, but is also designed to ease transfer into many baccalaureate social work (BSW) programs. Students interested in transfer options, should see their academic advisor early in their Edison educational journey.

Graduates of this degree program, who earn a "C" or better in all coursework, are eligible to seek application with the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board to become a state registered Social Work Assistant or SWA.

Possible job titles in Social Services include:

  • advocate
  • case manager
  • chemical dependency technician
  • job coach
  • social work assistant
  • family service worker
  • residential assistant
  • mental health technician
  • outreach worker
  • case aide
